This summer Dr. Faina Ryvkin’s research group traveled to Washington D.C to attend the American Chemical Society national meeting at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. A part of this research team is senior chemistry major, Louis Booysen. Louis had the amazing opportunity to present the research that he and his team have been working on throughout the academic years and the summer. In general, the group is interested in determining the overall structure of Lysyl Oxidase, which is a catalytic enzyme that functions in the extracellular matrix of the cell. The importance behind this research lies in the fact that Lysyl Oxidase is involved in a multitude of fibrotic diseases and also plays a role in some forms of cancer. The main problem with Lysyl Oxidase is the fact that the x-ray structure of the enzyme is unknown. This summer, Louis along with other members of his group made use of molecular modeling experiments in order to better understand the three dimensional structure of Lysyl Oxidase. The Department is very excited to welcome a new addition to our already impressive suite of chemistry instrumentation in the Wilkens Science Center. Earlier this month our new Agilent 1260 Infinity II liquid chromatography and InfinityLab quadrupole mass spectrometry detector (LC-MS) instrument arrived, was installed, and passed all tests. We are very excited to begin using this instrument in both teaching and research. LC-MS is an instrument very commonly used in pharmaceutical and biomedical companies. Having our students gain hands-on experience with this instrument will be invaluable as they move forward in internships and in their careers. Dr. Gerdon is already planning experiments for the Analytical Chemistry class in the spring semester! A multi-year collaboration between Dr. Gerdon and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA has led to a recent publication in the Journal of Chemical Education. This project involved students in the Analytical Chemistry course at Emmanuel College, but also general chemistry and analytical chemistry students at three other colleges across the country. The publication reports on “Supplemental Learning in the Laboratory: An Innovative Approach for Evaluating Knowledge and Method Transfer” and focuses on how new analytical techniques, or variations on existing techniques, could be taught to scientists across the country using online technology. Congratulations to Dr. Allen Price on being awarded his second NSF RUI grant at Emmanuel College. Dr. Price’s proposal, “RUI: Elucidating the mechanisms of site specific DNA cleavage using single molecule methods“, was funded for over $340,000 and will be used to support undergraduate research in biophysics.
