Nobel Laureate, Dr. Martin Karplus, visits campus

Posted on Mar 24 by

On March 14th, 2019, Professor Martin Karplus, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2013, visited Emmanuel College. He gave an academic lecture to students and professors entitled “Motion: Hallmark of Life. From Marsupials to Molecules”. In his lecture he traced the intellectual path between motion in animals and the molecules that make motion possible. He presented recent work that he found were most interesting! Dr. Karplus focused on the laws of motion for organisms to molecules and atoms. He shared a quote by Dr. Richard Feynman, “…everything that living things do can be understand in terms of the jigglings and wigglings of atoms”. Dr. Karplus then discussed the role of ATP synthase and showed an animation of how myosin “walks” on actin and how kinesis “walks” on microtubules to transport materials in an organized fashion. At the end of the lecture, a reception was held for students to meet Dr. Karplus and ask questions about his approach to science, academics, and education. The department would like to thank Dr. Karplus for his wonderful talk, the FENS seminar committee...

Ever Changing, Ever Emmanuel

Posted on Mar 21 by

A very impressive installment was recently introduced and unveiled on campus entitled “Ever Changing, Ever Emmanuel: 100 Years of Adaptation” History Exhibit. The installation highlights the impressive history of Emmanuel College as well as Emmanuel’s ability to adapt and thrive during pivotal periods of change locally, nationally and globally. One picture caught Dr. Gerdon’s eye as he walked down the hall thinking about recent experiments in Analytical Chemistry. I think the current students would agree with chemistry students of the...

Please Welcome Assistant Professor Dr. Nathanael Lau!

Posted on Feb 18 by

The Department of Chemistry and Physics is extremely excited to announce the addition of a new faculty member to our community. Dr. Nathanael Lau will be joining our department in Fall 2019 as an Assistant Professor in Inorganic Chemistry. Dr. Lau earned his Ph.D in Chemistry at the University of California Irvine and is completing his post-doctoral work at the University of Oregon. We are excited for the knowledge and expertise that he will bring to general chemistry, biochemistry, and inorganic chemistry, especially in air-sensitive chemistry. Dr. Lau’s research on campus with undergraduate students will focus on reactive sulfur species found in metallo-enzymes and will work towards mimicking enzyme active sites through inorganic synthesis. Please welcome Dr. Lau to campus and to our department this fall...

Chemistry at the Centennial Celebration!

Posted on Feb 3 by

The Centennial Celebration (1919 to 2019) kicked off on Friday, February 1st 2019 with a concert on campus by the Eli Cash Band, featuring Philosophy’s own Dr. Kaplan Hasanoglu. The excitement didn’t end there. There were surprise guest performances by Ellen Still, Greg Pare, Dr. Ben Allen, Dr. Ryan Mott, Dr. Adam Silver, and Chemistry’s Dr. Aren Gerdon (rockin on the saxophone). At Emmanuel we are chemists, but also musicians and have so many other...
