Aren Gerdon and student researchers publish!

Posted on Sep 17 by

Congratulations to Aimee Sanford ’16, Geoff Conklin ’15, and Jason Miech ’18 for the fantastic work, recently published in Materials Science & Engineering C! “Solution rheological parameters modulate calcium phosphate mineralization in a microfluidic device” This work is primarily based on the Distinction in the Field work by Geoff, Aimee, and Jason. It is an interesting combination of the engineering and chemistry aspects of controlling solid-forming reactions, like calcium phosphate mineralization, in a microfluidic device. Check out the abstract here! Congrats to Aimee, Geoff, and Jason!...

Welcome back!

Posted on Sep 5 by

On the morning of this centennial year, I’m struck by the rich history of Emmanuel Saints that have studied before us and I’m astounded by the progress that chemists have made in the past 100 years. Think about what those chemistry students were studying at Emmanuel College back in 1919! We have much to learn this year and for the next 100 years. Best wishes to all on a wonderful, challenging, and rewarding academic year. I’m so glad that our students are back on campus! Dr. Aren Gerdon Chair, Department of Chemistry and...

Busy Summers in Chemistry & Physics

Posted on Aug 31 by

While the campus may be quiet during the summer months, the Wilkens Science Center is always bustling with faculty and student research activity! Here are a few wonderful updates from faculty members this summer: Dr. Michelle Watt – Joined the Department of Chemistry and Physics as an Assistant Professor in Organic Chemistry. We are very excited for the expertise she brings to the organic chemistry team and for new research projects in non-covalent interactions and towards replacements for BPA-type plastics. Prof. Eric Camire – Published the manuscript “Approaches to Interrogate the Role of Nucleotide Hydrolysis by Metal Trafficking NTPases: The Nbp35–Cfd1 Iron–Sulfur Cluster Scaffold as a Case Study” in Methods in Enzymology with co-authors at Boston University. Dr. Aren Gerdon – Presented research and education talks at two conferences this summer, the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Gordon Research Conference on Biomineralization. Three students, Jake Shlaferman, Emma Duffy, and Alex Paige, also presented at the ACS meeting. Dr. Allen Price – Presented research talks with students at two conferences this summer, the Biophysical Society...

Senior Projects on “Chemistry of Materials”

Posted on Jun 5 by

Materials have such a tangible place in our society, it’s hard to ignore the chemistry that goes into their synthesis, production, and use at a molecular level. Our senior chemistry majors spent their final semester learning about the Chemistry of Materials and presented an impressive array of topics to our department and to the Emmanuel College community. These presentations took place during a poster session allowing anyone to take a leisurely stroll by or to stop for an in-depth discussion. Attendees came to find out what penguins, Kevlar, squid, fireworks, contact lenses, and graphene have in common! The poster session was a wonderful success and we are all proud of their hard work. The range of projects was impressive – check out the project titles below. Functionalizing Cellulose Acetate Nanofibers for Increased Electronic Productivity and Safety for Medical Devices Oral Peptide Drug Delivery Assisted by Nanoparticle Carriers Detection of Nitroaromatic Compounds through use of Fluorescent Metal Organic Frameworks 3D Printing of Cellulosic Materials for Biomedical Applications Improving the Tensile Strength, Environmental Sensitivities, and Energy Absorptivity of Kevlar for Use...

Chemistry Major Day Celebration!

Posted on Jun 5 by

On March 23rd, current and new chemistry majors and minors took part in a “Chemistry Major Day Celebration.” The celebration featured a talk from alumnus Mike Lynch ’13 who talked about the research he is conducting while completing his PhD in the Department of Chemistry at Cornell University. Mike investigates the cross-linking reaction that takes place in the Treponema denticola hook protein FlgE. It was really amazing to be able to have the professors, current chemistry majors and minors, and alumni all in one room. Specifically, it was great to hear about some of the many ways chemistry can prepare you for your future career. For Mike Lynch ’13, it has involved graduate level work and a future PhD. For fellow alum Christian Kelly ’17, his degree has led to work as a Legislative Aid in the MA State Senate. For Sunaro Ngourn ’12, his degree has led to a Research Engineer position at Lockheed Martin working on energy technology and a MS program in Chemical Engineering at Northeastern University. All three have taken very different routes but it...
